Scenic in the autumn and blooming by spring, New England is an essential destination for a quick, all-American getaway.
Take a break from the sweltering Texas heat and venture north for cooler climes this summer.
Get roadtrip ready
The New England coastline has a plethora of road-tripping options for those who like to take the scenic route. While New England’s changing leaves are a sight to see, the region’s lush summer foliage shading the road is also a welcome sight.
For the explorers at heart, traverse Vermont’s Route 100, or Scenic Route 100 Byway, which spans the entire state at 146 miles. Stop by Vermont’s rich historic sites and discover new culinary feasts on the way.
Travel a shorter route along the New Hampshire coast, an 18-mile drive along State Highway 1A. Get a taste of the freshest seafood and feel the cool breeze while visiting some of the most beautiful beaches of New England.
Take a walk
A trip to New England isn’t complete without the classic views of its iconic coastline. Stretch your legs from a long road trip or cramped flight by walking along Rhode Island’s Newport Cliff Walk. The 3.5-mile, mostly paved path winds along the rugged Rhode Island coastline, ocean spray included.
Landside, views are equally impressive. Towering estates and historic landmarks should make any cynic’s heart race and jaw drop.
While the path is an easy walk for most of its span, there are some portions that are rockier. Make sure to take plenty of breaks along the way to soak in the scenery.
Indulge in art
A hidden gem in the hills of Berkshire County, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is an innovative art space comprising over 16 acres, 28 buildings and 500,000 square feet of renovated space with more than 200,000 square feet still awaiting renovation.
The industrial warehouses accommodate space for forward-thinking, visual art from some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists, including Ai Weiwei and Sol Lewitt. The sprawling grounds are also home to a dynamic mix of performing arts, such as contemporary dance and avant-garde theater. Its Solid Sound Festival, headlined by Grammy-award winning band Wilco, hosts more than 8,000 visitors a day every other year.
MASS MoCa is a three-hour drive northwest of Boston, making it an ideal day trip during any New England getaway.
