As the population ages, thousands of Dallas families are faced with the challenges of assisting aging parents with relocating into more manageable or supportive housing.

To help North Dallas caregivers and families better deal with the complexities involved in late-life moves, Angela McCants and C C Allen of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate are partnering with sponsors of SeniorLifestyleSpecialist.org to provide a seminar called “Intentional Legacy: Gather Your Stories, Share Your Legacy, and Celebrate Your Journey.” The casual and interactive educational forum will take place from 8:15 to 10 a.m. on June 16 at the Park City Club.

The seminar will be presented by Ann Ranson, a trained life and business coach. She has created a three-part legacy-building process that results in a road map for the last chapter of your life, including options for an ethical will, a video biography, and facilitated family meetings.

“As North Dallas Realtors specializing in the 55 and older market, it is our goal to insure that older adults and their families are adequately equipped and aware of all the senior-living options and resources available to them,” McCants says. “Adult children often find themselves making hard decisions, while trying to navigate in uncharted territory. Through seminars like this one, we hope to provide helpful insights and useful information, so families can focus on what is most important — their elder loved one.”

Tickets can be purchased at heartcafedallas.com. They cost $35, which includes a full breakfast.

Union Station will be decidedly more bookish than normal this evening, when the Downtown venue hosts A Toast to Literacy. The fundraiser for Literacy Instruction for Texas, featuring keynote speaker Matt Bondurant, is co-chaired by author Kathleen Kent and Dave Perry-Miller associate C C Allen.

A longtime LIFT supporter, Allen traces her passion for adult literacy to a family tradition of support for education through the Feild Co-operative Association, a nonprofit organization that provides low-cost loans to deserving students for higher education. And she’s not the only Dave Perry-Miller associate who’s dedicated to the literacy cause; Dave Millheiser is a member of LIFT’s board of directors.

To say thanks to the organization’s supporters, Allen, Millheiser, and his wife, Peggy Millheiser, are offering free assessments of their homes’ values. Patrons will find gift certificates for this service in their cars after tonight’s event.

Coincidentally, today is North Texas Giving Day. If you make a donation to Literacy Instruction for Texas — or any of our region’s numerous other nonprofits — your dollars will be enhanced by the Communities Foundation of Texas.
