Dallas’ Leadership Has Changed a Lot Since the Start of Business on Monday

Dallas County residents have seen a lot of changes at the top in the last 24 hours. Let’s review them in chronological order.

Highland Park ISD: The Board of Trustees officially hired Tom Trigg as the district’s new superintendent after a state-mandated waiting period of 21 days.

Highland Park: The Town Council promoted Rick Pyle to the position of director of public safety, replacing the late Chris Vinson. He’ll officially be sworn in as the town’s top cop and firefighter on July 13.

Dallas: Six newly elected members of the City Council, including new representatives for Lakewood and Lake Highlands, took their oath of office.

Dallas ISD: Superintendent Mike Miles announced his resignation, bringing his tumultuous tenure to an end after three years.

Residents of East Dallas — including Lakewood and Lake Highlands — will be interested to know that changes are coming to the former Steakley Chevrolet lot on Northwest Highway. As The Dallas Morning News recently reported, a Houston developer called Ainbinder Co. is planning a shopping strip called High Point Center that will include between 160,000 and 170,000 square feet of store space.

To put those numbers in perspective, the Target and Kohl’s in Medallion Center across Northwest Highway account for more than 200,000 square feet of combined space. At Timber Creek Crossing, which is just across Skillman Street from the Steakley site, the JC Penney occupies about 104,000 square feet, while the Walmart/Sam’s Club weighs in at nearly 315,000.

We can safely assume that none of the aforementioned retailers will be High Point Center tenants, and the Morning News reported that Costco has passed on the land before. So which stores would you like to see there?

If you want to a cast a ballot in the May 9 elections, you need to register to vote no later than Thursday.

There will be nine contested elections for seats on the Dallas City Council, including those of the mayor and the representatives of Lakewood and Lake Highlands. Meanwhile, three positions on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees will be up for grabs, including those representing portions of Preston Hollow and East Dallas.
