Dallas’ Leadership Has Changed a Lot Since the Start of Business on Monday

Mike Miles

Dallas County residents have seen a lot of changes at the top in the last 24 hours. Let’s review them in chronological order.

Highland Park ISD: The Board of Trustees officially hired Tom Trigg as the district’s new superintendent after a state-mandated waiting period of 21 days.

Highland Park: The Town Council promoted Rick Pyle to the position of director of public safety, replacing the late Chris Vinson. He’ll officially be sworn in as the town’s top cop and firefighter on July 13.

Dallas: Six newly elected members of the City Council, including new representatives for Lakewood and Lake Highlands, took their oath of office.

Dallas ISD: Superintendent Mike Miles announced his resignation, bringing his tumultuous tenure to an end after three years.

Another Shopping Center Proposed at Northwest Highway and Abrams Road

High Point
This rendering supplied by Ainbinder Co. shows what High Point Center will look like when viewed from the southeast, with Medallion Center to the south and Timber Creek Crossing to the west.

Residents of East Dallas — including Lakewood and Lake Highlands — will be interested to know that changes are coming to the former Steakley Chevrolet lot on Northwest Highway. As The Dallas Morning News recently reported, a Houston developer called Ainbinder Co. is planning a shopping strip called High Point Center that will include between 160,000 and 170,000 square feet of store space.

To put those numbers in perspective, the Target and Kohl’s in Medallion Center across Northwest Highway account for more than 200,000 square feet of combined space. At Timber Creek Crossing, which is just across Skillman Street from the Steakley site, the JC Penney occupies about 104,000 square feet, while the Walmart/Sam’s Club weighs in at nearly 315,000.

We can safely assume that none of the aforementioned retailers will be High Point Center tenants, and the Morning News reported that Costco has passed on the land before. So which stores would you like to see there?

Four-Bedroom Home in Lake Highlands Features an Extensive List of Upgrades

Situated atop a beautifully landscaped lot, the two-story, four-bedroom home at 8817 Arborside Drive is conveniently located near Royal Oaks Country Club, Moss Haven Elementary School, Lake Highlands High School, Harry Moss Park, and the White Rock Lake Trail system. Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate’s Carmen DiPenti, who is offering the property for $499,500, will hold it open to prospective buyers from 2 to 4 on Sunday afternoon.

The three living areas are immersed in natural light, especially the solarium, which features a skylight and a wall of windows providing views of the backyard. Shaded by mature trees, the yard features a wooden deck with a pergola plus plenty of green space. There’s also a MosquitoNix misting system in place to ensure pest-free enjoyment.

The sunken living room is the centerpiece of the first floor. Open to the solarium, formal dining room, and entry, it is bathed in sunlight from the large windows and doors across the front of the house. Its open configuration is accented by recessed lighting, exposed beams, a fireplace, and a wall of built-in shelves.

The kitchen features granite counters, a gas range, and stainless-steel appliances that are practically new. The adjoining breakfast room has more than enough space for a table, and there’s also bar seating at the end of the kitchen counter. Just beyond the breakfast room is the den, which is connected to the utility room and the attached two-car garage.

The master suite, which can be accessed from the solarium, has the same elegant laminate flooring as the rest of the lower level. The master bathroom features a double vanity, a tub beneath windows, and a separate glass-enclosed shower. The suite also includes a room that could be used as an office or nursery. Three more spacious bedrooms can be found upstairs.

Built in 1974, the home features upgrades throughout its 3,344 square feet, including a hail-proof roof (2011), state-of-the art gutters (2012), an electric garage door (2014), new heating and air-conditioning units (2014), a fully updated electrical system (2015), refinished cabinets (2015), and 11 inches of insulation added to the attic (2015).

Traditional Home in Lochwood Boasts Extensive Updates and Backyard Oasis

The stunning traditional home at 10562 Silverock Drive has received too many updates to list them all here. Suffice it to say the residence is exceptional in every way. Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate’s Meg Skinner is offering the property for $549,900.

The common areas on the first floor were designed so that one room easily flows to the next. The formals are to your left after you enter the foyer, and the family room is straight ahead. In between them sits the kitchen, which is connected to the family room by a wall finished in the same handsome bricks used on the façade.

On the kitchen side, that wall holds the gas convection range, the microwave and the wine refrigerator. On the other side, it’s anchored by the fireplace. The fabulous kitchen also boasts granite counters, travertine floors and backsplash with copper inserts, a farmhouse sink, high-end stainless-steel appliances, tons of storage, and a garden window in the breakfast area.

The spacious first-floor master bedroom has a large seating area, two closets, a glass door to the sauna and fabulous oasis backyard, and an updated bath with a vessel sink. The secondary bedroom downstairs is light and bright with its own wonderfully updated bath that can be closed off from the bedroom for guest access as well.

The second floor has two more bedrooms, one of which is being used as a game room. There’s also an exercise/yoga room upstairs. The second floor can be accessed via an exterior staircase.

The incredible backyard features multiple seating areas, professional landscaping, a heated pool with pebble sheen, a Swedish dry sauna and a poolside half bath.

The home’s numerous green and energy-efficient features include double-pane windows throughout, two gas water heaters, zoned gas furnaces, roof turbines, ceiling fans and mature shade trees. The .279-acre lot in sought-after Lochwood also boasts five covered parking spaces — a three-car garage plus a two-car carport.
