If you’re looking for a way to inexpensively entertain your kids on a summer afternoon, I highly recommend the M-Line Trolley along McKinney Avenue, a treasure of Dallas’ bustling Uptown neighborhood. My two boys love the trolley because it’s a form of transportation that doesn’t require seat belts (always exciting) and because it can be a bone-rattling ride at times. I, on the other hand, love it because the trolley cars are air-conditioned and free. An added bonus: The trolley line terminates at DART’s Cityplace/Uptown Station, which features not only the biggest escalator you’ll ever see but also an inclinator.
This Saturday presents a prime opportunity to enjoy the trolley, as the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Riders on one particular trolley car, Matilda, will be served birthday cake between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
This first video is really well done, but it’s a bit deceptive because the trolleys don’t move nearly that fast.
This next video is a more accurate representation of a trolley’s journey, from the perspective of the motorman, a.k.a. the driver.
